God, in love, in wisdom, in faithfulness, corrects His children.
"My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of Him: for whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom He receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons" (Heb. 12:5-8).
When God corrects His children, it is not because He hates us – but rather, because He loves us! "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent" (Rev. 3:19).
To get rid of the dross, and obtain pure gold – fiery processes are essential. We do not realize how deceitful and desperately wicked is our human heart! (Jer. 17:9-10). We are positively commanded not to think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try us – but rather, to rejoice! (1Pet. 4:12-19).
We must get to the end of the natural before God brings forth His supernatural works through the channels of our cleansed lives. Abraham had to be tested for years, in fact, he was "as good as dead" before supernaturally the promised heir, Isaac, was conceived (Heb. 11:8-12).
God’s Shock Troops
And shall God’s ragged remnant – His Shock Troops, in the climaxing conflict with the powers of darkness (Eph. 6:10-18), expect to go sailing along on calm seas, with no enemies to encounter, no storms to breast? Indeed not! To fit into God’s end-of-the-age plan, to be among those who pray through for earth’s last Pentecost – to be workers together with God (2 Cor. 6:1) in evangelizing the world before the final judgments fall – surely, surely we must not think it strange concerning the fiery trials we have to go through!
Job was going to get a double portion, but it required, evidently, first a double emptying, a double testing. Our wise and loving Heavenly Father did not pour out on Job when he was rich and increased with goods and had need of nothing – "twice as much as he had before" (Job 42:10), but He waited until He had prepared Job to receive this double portion.
Christian friend, tried, tested, weary, perhaps wondering – are you going to let God get you ready for the double portion that Elisha asked for (2 Kgs. 2:9)?
Do you believe – are you fully persuaded (Rom. 4:13-21) – that God will, according to His promise, "cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month" (Joel 2:23)? He has indeed given us the former rain moderately (Joel 2:23). Do you believe that He will complete His work of revival in these tremendous days by giving a double outpouring of His Spirit?
"Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, till he receive the early and latter rain" (Jas. 5:7).
Joseph was chosen for a special work, and so he had to endure very special testings to prepare him for that work. Sold into Egypt, put into prison – it seemed that his dreams were never going to materialize. In fact, his brethren said, "We shall see what will become of his dreams" (Gen. 37:17-20). Well, they did see – but it certainly took time.
David was chosen to be king over Israel. He was anointed, he slew Goliath, but then what a time of testing he endured for years before he ruled over all Israel! Saul sought to kill him. David felt that he was being hunted like a partridge, sought after like a flea (1 Sam. 26:12-20).
