There are different kinds of baldness which include pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), and cicatricial (scarring) alopecia. These two are permanent. For treating conditions such as androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata, the drug minoxidil (Rogaine) is recommended. Finasteride (propecia) is recommended for treating male-pattern baldness, and corticosteroids and anthralin (dritho-scalp) for alopecia areata.

# Then comes surgery, again, not a cure, but a treatment for baldness which helps the existing hair to cover lost ground. Surgery includes hair transplant and scalp reduction. Such surgeries, though many people opt for, are expensive and painful too. Moreover, side effects that they cause may include infection and scarring. In cases, where there is no response to the use of medical treatment or when surgery is not an option, people may choose to go for wigs or hairpieces. There are, nowadays, wigs and hairpieces which offer more natural feel and look.

Basically, the treatment is driven by the underlying cause of the condition. For instance, if its genetic, then the patient may choose to go with medicines or surgery as mentioned above. And if is caused by stress or medications, then getting rid of the cause may improve the symptoms. Treatment may help the person to grow back some hair and prevent hair loss too. However, full growth is most unlikely.

# Apply a mix of coconut oil and lime juice, and notice the reduction in hair loss.

# Healthy growth of hair may be achieved by applying mustard oil boiled with henna leaves.

# Make a paste from pigeon pea or red gram and massage your head with it. Regular application would prevent hair loss thus, baldness.

# Before bathing, prepare a paste of hot olive oil, honey and cinnamon (1 teaspoon) powder. Apply this paste and let it sit for 15 minutes.

# Treating bald patches with paste made from the seeds of lemon and black pepper also helps.

# Application of castor oil is also a well-known self-care method to promote healthier and thicker
hair growth. The oil also helps in keeping the scalp moist, and get rid of dry hair.

The amount of research that has gone or is in progress in the finding a possible cure for baldness, is perhaps, more than any other one in the history of medical science. Scientists have already achieved the breakthrough in this respect in animal testing. Bald mice were tested with two methods; one that involved manipulation of stem cells, and the other comprised the use of a chemical compound that nullifies the effects of stress on hair. Amazingly, scientists were able to cause the bald mice to grow back hair, within 5 days of treatment. So considering these breakthroughs in animal testing, Roland Lauster from Berlin Technical University has high hopes that the same could be achieved in humans within 5 years. Like Roland, other experts hold high optimistic views too.
